    The American Academy of Dermatology is a non-profit medical specialty association that was founded in 1938. All the work we undertake on behalf of our members, their patients and the public is guided by a clear vision of excellence in dermatology, and our mission of promoting leadership in dermatology, and excellence in patient care through education, research and advocacy.

    With over 180 employees, we support the largest, most influential dermatology group in the United States. With a membership of more than 20,000, the AAD represents virtually all practicing dermatologists in the United States, as well as a growing number of international dermatologists. The AAD is committed to advancing the diagnosis and medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair and nails; advocating high standards in clinical practice, education, and research in dermatology; and supporting and enhancing patient care for a lifetime of healthier skin.

    The American Academy of Dermatology Association is the sister organization to the AAD, and is the resource for government affairs as well as health policy and practice information for dermatologists. It plays a major role in formulating policies that can enhance the quality of dermatologic care.

     Medical insurance: Choose between a participating provider option (PPO) plan and a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan.
     Dental insurance: The AAD offers a preferred provider option (PPO) plan.
     Vision insurance: This benefit includes exams, lenses and frame coverage.
     Medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts: Eligible employees can set aside pre-tax income to pay for medical and/or dependent care expenses.
     Life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance:  This benefit is two times your annual up to $250,000.
     Short- and long-term disability insurance:  This benefit pays 60% of the employee's salary for eligible time away from work.
     403(b) plan: The AAD matches dollar for dollar up to 6 percent of the employee's contribution. Eligible employees can contribute up to 40 percent of their compensation to the annual deferral limit on a pre-tax basis.
     401(a) Pension plan: Eligible employees receive an amount equal to 5 percent of their compensation.
     Vacation days: Full-time employees accrue 10 days per year for one to three years of service; 15 days per year for three to 10 years of service; and 20 days per year after 10 or more years of service. New employees receive a prorated amount of vacation days during their first year of service.
     Sick days: Full-time employees accrue 12 days per year. New employees receive a prorated amount of sick days during their first year of service.
     Holidays: Full-time employees receive nine scheduled, paid holidays and three floating holidays per year.
     Incentive compensation program: Cash bonuses are based on the achievement of organizational and departmental goals.
     Performance appraisal program: Formal supervisor and self-performance appraisals are conducted every year and merit increases are awarded based on annual performance appraisal ratings.
     Work-life balance programs: These programs provide staff with a more flexible work environment while meeting the needs of the AAD. This includes our volunteer program, employee assistance program, employee matching gift program, flexible work arrangements and many more options.
     Working on Wellness (WOW) program: Our WOW program provides all AAD employees fun incentives and opportunities for participating in a variety of healthy lifestyle activities. 
     Recognition programs: In recognition that employees are our most valuable asset, the AAD has established a recognition program to reward and recognize employees. This includes gift cards, additional time off, years of service awards and many more options.
     Tuition reimbursement: After six months of service, full-time employees may receive reimbursement up to a maximum of $5,250 in a calendar year for accredited courses at a university. The AAD pays on a scaled reimbursement schedule based on the grade achieved.

    Through AAD humanitarian programs, we carry out our commitment to educate the public about healthy skin, hair and nails in an effort to motivate them to take positive action in improving their quality of life, and in the case of skin cancer, save lives.

    Additionally, we recognize the importance our employees place on their ability to give back to their communities and to charities they feel close to, and support those efforts through our employee programs.


    Ways the AAD helps the public

    SPOT Skin Cancer™: We are dedicated to creating a world without skin cancer. By educating the public about skin cancer prevention and detection, we can help change behaviors and ultimately save lives. SPOT Skin Cancer™:

    • Offers free nationwide SPOTme® skin cancer screenings, conducted by AAD board-certified dermatologists. Since 1985, 2.3 million people have been screened though this life-saving program.
    • Provides grants through the Shade Structure Program for non-profits and schools to create sun-safe outdoor areas. More than 320 shade structures have been granted across the U.S.
    • Produces public education advertisements that focus on the importance of sun protection and early detection of skin cancer, and spreads the word that exposure to ultraviolet light is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer.
    • Offers free skin cancer educational resources to the public such as the body mole map, skin self-exam instructions, and tips on how to select a sunscreen.

    Play Sun Smart™: We work with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) to raise awareness about skin cancer and offer prevention and detection tips to the baseball community through educational handouts and free skin cancer screenings.

    Camp Discovery: Every year, we provide six, one-week sessions of camp in five locations throughout the U.S. In its over 20 year history, thousands of children with chronic skin conditions have participated in this transformational program, forming life-long friendships and confidence in a place where they are seen as kids first, not their conditions.

    Ways AAD employees can give back to their community

    Employee matching gift program: We gladly help support the charitable efforts of our employees by giving them 50 percent of every dollar they donate to an eligible charity, up to $100 per year.

    Volunteerism program: Employees receive 7.5 hours of paid volunteer time each calendar year. Time can be used in hourly increments.
